Cybermen In Chicago!

I was sure that Doctor Who was big enough by 2011 that even my 1960s-style Cyberman would be immediately recognizable, but I was wrong. I should have waited a year.

Keeping it Classy.

My reasons for choosing a Cyberman design from the sixties were both artistic and practical. For one thing, I love the style of old Doctor Who costumes, with so much blind ambition and creative repurposing. That’s what makes them so fundamentally different from modern Doctor Who, and that leads me to the practical reason: a classic Cyberman would actually be achievable.

Silver jumpsuits. Vacuum hoses. And are those Wiffle balls? I aimed to build my costume around that aesthetic, while also incorporating a slightly more modern head shape and the now-signature teardrop eye pattern.

I was extremely proud of this costume, which had a long post-Halloween life stuffed like a scarecrow, guarding my comic book store.

Invading Chicago.

On Halloween I stalked the streets of Wicker Park, where I window shopped, gazed wistfully at a time machine, and got punched in the nuts by a Ninja Turtle. Many onlookers complimented my costume, but too many of them called me a ‘robot’ and clearly didn’t appreciate my origin. They’ve all been upgraded now.
