Hobbeson & Chives

Crimefighting butlers in love and battle!

Blast from the Past

Thirty-odd years ago, most of my afternoons - or at least all the good ones that I actually remember - were spent drawing comics with my best friend Steve. Most of the time, there was no real narrative purpose; we just liked to draw characters. I shudder to imagine the sheer number of characters we created and discarded over the years.

A small number of them endured, not as projects, but as fondly-recalled dapples of sunshine from my childhood. On some otherwise grim day working retail, I might suddenly remember Mucous Man and have myself a private little chuckle. But I never really returned to those characters as an adult.

Except about fifteen years ago, in 2006, I decided to revisit Hobbeson & Chives. Who were they? They were butlers who fought crime, but beyond that, I don’t think we had ever made any firm decisions. And in 2006, I knew I didn’t have the artistic chops to undertake a big project. But I wanted to have a little fun, and recapture those afternoons full of freeform creativity.

Serving Tea… and Justice!

So I started drawing these little Hobbeson and Chives comics, but not actual comics. I drew prologues, epilogues, climaxes and splash pages - all the best parts of comics that would never truly exist.

It was good practice and good fun, and over time I started to get a feel for who these characters are - as heroes, and as men. The result of those thirty pages was this zine, Adventures in Service! It might be the best crimefighting butler comic of 2006, but don’t quote me on that.

Anyhow, I’m proud and embarrassed of this thing at the same time. There is some clumsy art, and choppy writing, but it just makes me remember how much fun I had making it. Enjoy the whole thing below, warts and all. I still love these fellas.

Hobbeson and Chives: Resurrection!

So now it’s 2022 and I am working on some paintings, to show at the local library this fall. I’ve decided to bring my butlers out to play, and I am starting with a splashy action scene (detail below!) I don’t know what the future holds for Hobbeson and Chives, but it is good to see them again.
